Abstract

Sleep bruxism in children consists of teeth grinding, carried out through repetitive movements of the jaw muscles during sleep. This parafunction is commonly associated with tooth wear, tiredness and/or morning pain in the muscles responsible for chewing. Its prevalence in children varies widely, with a tendency to decrease with increasing age, which makes it possible to correlate bruxism in children with the development of the masticatory neuromuscular system. Objective: To discuss, through a literature review, the clinical characteristics, etiological factors, signs, symptoms and appropriate treatments for sleep bruxism in children. Methodology: a survey of scientific literature was carried out in the PubMed/Medline and SciELO databases. As an inclusion criterion, the articles adopted were those that presented the availability of the full text of the study and clarity in the methodological detail. The descriptors used to select articles were sleep bruxism in children; treatment for bruxism (bruxism treatment); etiological factors of bruxism (sleep bruxism etiology). Results: the treatment or prevention of sleep bruxism symptoms in children can be done through occlusal adjustments, pharmacological treatment and psychological support, and it is essential to select the most appropriate form of treatment for each specific case. Conclusion: It is essential for the dentist to have knowledge of the various etiological factors linked to the involvement of SB in children. For this reason, it is necessary to have a good evaluation and help from the family in the diagnosis, as well as in the treatment or mitigation of the negative effects that bruxism brings to the orofacial system.
