Abstract

Introduction: White lesions in the oral cavity constitute a heterogeneous group of alterations, having different etiologies, which can range from lesions of an irritating character to lesions that indicate a certain potential for malignancy, thus requiring a careful evaluation. Among the factors that influence the diagnostic process are: the color, distribution, duration and location of the lesion, however, due to the clinical similarity between some white lesions, it is not possible to establish a definitive diagnosis only through clinical examination, requiring the realization biopsy, and in some cases requesting additional tests, in order to achieve a reliable diagnosis, and to carry out the appropriate treatment. Objectives: To discuss the main white lesions present in the oral cavity, emphasizing the differential diagnosis between each one, since such an approach will directly imply professional conduct and the establishment of the appropriate treatment for each patient. Methods: For this, a literature review was carried out by searching for articles published in PubMED between the years 2016 and 2020. Results: It should be noted that white oral lesions can range from benign reactive lesions to potentially malignant lesions. Attention is required in the clinical examination of white lesions, asking the patient questions about the origin of the lesion, in addition to performing semi-technical maneuvers to obtain important information about the lesion. Conclusion: In addition, it is necessary for dentists to know about the different types of white lesions that affect the oral cavity, in addition to performing a biopsy for histopathological analysis to obtain the definitive diagnosis.
