Abstract

Introduction: The correct handling of an avulsed tooth is crucial for the success of the treatment. Objectives: Evaluate the best teaching strategy (lecture, handout, and poster) for parents/guardians on dental avulsion and emergency behavior. Methodology: The population selected in the present study was parents/guardians of children aged 6 to 9 years from three private schools. Firstly, a questionnaire was applied to verify the knowledge of the participants of the dental avulsion study. Subsequent, in every school, a teaching strategy was carried out. After 30 days, the same questionnaire was again applied. Statistical analysis was performed by comparing the proportions of X and Y (p≤0.05). Results: The lecture was not viable due to the absence of the parents/guardians in the event previously scheduled. However, this does not prove that it is ineffective. A satisfactory knowledge was obtained after reading the poster and the handout, but there was no statistical significance. About the best storage medium of the avulsed tooth, the poster was statistically more effective than the handout (p<0.05). Conclusion: The poster and the handout are capable of transmitting information to parents/guardians on how to act on a dental avulsion. Thus, lay individuals can become apter when they have notions, even basic, about post-trauma care and avulsed tooth.
