Abstract

Periodontal disease (PD) is a common and complex inflammatory process characterized by the destruction of supporting periodontal tissues, and has been evaluated for a potential role in the development of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). The aim of this study was to conduct a literature review on the relationship between GDM and PD. Virtual searches were performed in PubMed/Medline databases until June 2021, and included studies in the English language, published in the last ten years. For this, the following descriptors were used in the English language: gestational diabetes and periodontal diseases. Within this search, 71 articles were found, of which, after the screening process, 53 studies were excluded for not answering the guiding question. Thus, a total of 18 original research studies were included in this narrative literature review. The studies showed that periodontitis acts as a risk factor for the development of GDM, and knowing the social determinants of health involved in the health-disease process of periodontal disease may help establish a link between these comorbidities that affect this portion of the population.
