Abstract

Introduction: Distal radius fractures are the most common in orthopedic practice, accounting for 17.5% of all adult fractures, and 4.5% of these are classified as intra-articular complex fractures. Among the different methods available for its management, a dorsal spanning plate is an option for the management of unstable comminuted fractures of the distal radius, but it is rarely used. Objective: to radiographically evaluate the postoperative outcomes of patients with AO 2R3C3 distal radius fractures managed by the spanning plate technique. Methods: A retrospective study that evaluated 26 patients, aged 20 to 69 years, undergoing osteosynthesis, from 2015 to 2017, with a minimum follow-up of 6 months. For radiographic measurement, the following parameters were defined: ulnar variance, volar inclination, ulnar inclination, and joint step. Results: The mean value of the ulnar variance was 0.88 mm, the volar slope was 3.58 degrees, the ulnar slope was 16.34 degrees, and the joint step was 0.31 mm. Conclusion: It is concluded that the distraction plate method is an additional useful and effective tool in the treatment of complex joint fractures of the distal radius.
