Abstract

Introduction: As it is the outermost tissue covering the teeth, tooth enamel is susceptible to changes in its color, manifested by stains and superficial opacities. In this situation, one of the most common treatments used to overcome such conditions is enamel microabrasion, mainly, because it is a safe, conservative and effective method. However, in complex cases of deeper stains, microabrasive treatment may not obtain fully satisfactory results and, therefore, other existing treatment modalities may be necessary for the total removal of stained areas. Objective: To take a literature review to discuss the treatment modalities for the management of chromatic alterations that can affect the dental enamel. Material and method: A bibliographic survey was carried out through an electronic search in the databases: National Library of Medicine (PubMed), Scientific Electronic Library Online (Scielo), Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde (BVS) e Google Scholar during the range from 2007 to 2021, using the descriptors in portuguese/english: enamel microabrasion (microabrasão do esmalte), dental fluorosis (fluorose dentaria) and tooth bleaching (clareamento dental). Results: Literature review, randomized clinical trial, systematic review and case report articles' were objects of exploratory analysis and, after a careful filtering, 27 productions were selected to compose this review. Conclusion: The professional's choice for the other modalities of aesthetic treatment for superficial stains on dental enamel is intrinsically dependent on the degree and depth of staining, as well as the complexity of each case.
