The entry of the woman into the gestational period brings about hormonal and psychological transformations. The higher incidence of dental caries during the gestational period is unrelated to pregnancy and is triggered by the increase in the number of food intakes performed during the day, a consequence of the reduction in stomach volume. Because this area is very vascularized it is necessary to take extra care with the oral cavity, since physiological changes in this area can generate systemic reflexes and end up reaching the fetus. This study aims to review the literature on the importance of prenatal dental care and the reason why there is not much involvement of pregnant women. This study was carried out by searching articles published in the bibliographic databases of the academic Google, Scielo and Pubmed. The main lack of follow-up is caused by the fear that the procedures will affect the baby. The dentist helps to promote this fear due to the insecurity of performing procedures in this group. One of the factors that leads to the neglect of the visit of pregnant women to the dentist is due to the lack of knowledge about the importance of dental prenatal. Dental prenatal care is a moment that helps mothers prevent diseases that affect the cavity that can affect the fetus through systemic circulation, but many mothers do not pay attention to the importance of this moment due to lack of information.
