Abstract

Objective: The objective was to perform a narrative review of the literature on partially edentulous arch classification systems. Methodology: In this narrative review of the literature, literature was sought through books on removable partial dentures and through databases such as Google Scholar and Pubmed. Using the key terms classification sistem (classification system), dental education (dental education) and removable partial prosthesis. The selection of the literature was performed based on reading abstracts and abstracts; thus, the inclusion criteria were literature in Portuguese and English, research studies and literature reviews. The exclusion criteria were literature that did not address the topic in question or classifications that did not address rehabilitation with PPR. Results: Escarce literature, several existing classifications were found, but they were not well-acepted by the scientific dentistry community. The classifications of Cummer, Kennedy, Rumpel, Müller, Wild, Kennedy-Applegate, American College of Prosthodontists, Implant Corret-Kennedy are the most relevant and prevalent in the literature. The study of classifications was previously proposed in a static form, but it is known that this is essential for the planning of the metallic structure of the prosthesis. Final Considerations: According to the searched literature, it was shown that a single classification is not enough to identify the partially edentulous arch, and that the classification itself must show a glimpse of the planning of the removable partial prosthesis. Therefore, classifications must be grouped based on the biomechanics, topography, function, chewing load transmission, diagnosis and treatment.
