Abstract

Rheumatoid arthritis is a disease characterized by the presence of symmetrical peripheral polyarthritis caused by the destruction of joints due to bone erosion, which leads to deformity of the regions. One of the basic treatments for the disease is the use of the drug Methotrexate, a type of DMCD (a drug that modifies the course of the disease), which is responsible for reducing the signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis activity. In this report, the effect of low intensity phototherapy in the treatment of oral mucositis in a 67-year-old female patient with rheumatoid arthritis will be addressed, complaining of painful symptoms and difficulty to feed, with an ulcerative, bleeding lesion, presenting edema, erythema and pseudomembranes, occupying almost the entire lower lip and part of the upper lip. The lesion was treated with low red intensity Lasertherapy, which is an option when it comes to mucositis, as it has anti-inflammatory and analgesic functions. After four sessions, it was observed the total healing of the lesions, providing the patient with improvement in basic oral functions and consequent quality of life.
