Abstract

Introduction: White and aligned teeth are constantly associated with oral health, good psychosocial acceptance and improved self-esteem. Tooth whitening is a non-invasive procedure with quick results for treatment of intrinsic and extrinsic pigments, through chemical oxireduction reactions. With the increase aesthetic demand for whiter teeth, cheaper, easily accessible alternatives such as the use of whitening toothpastes, are growing sought after by those who have interest in improving the appearance of the smile. Objective: Review the literature on the use of whitening dentifrices in Dentistry. Methods: Were searched databases with the keywords “tooth bleaching”, “tooth whitening”, “activated charcoal”, “whitening toothpaste”, 27 articles published between the years 2016 and 2020.
