Abstract

Malocclusion is the abnormal alignment of upper and lower teeth caused by several factors, for example, the use of pacifiers. With the spread of preventive ideologies, the promotion of the use of orthodontic pacifiers in order to prevent such problems. Objective: To carry out an integrative literature review, with emphasis on the reasons for the development of malocclusions arising from orthodontic pacifiers, so that it answers the research question, in addition to presenting the therapeutic methods most used by the authors. Methodology: A literature search was performed through the electronic database PubMed, using the terms (MeSH): “Pacifiers”; “Malocclusion”; "Orthodontics". The articles were obtained according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria pre-included and the Boolean connector “AND” was used. Results and Discussion: It was observed that of the seven completed articles (7/100%), six (6/85%) concluded that there is the development of deleterious habits in the stomatognathic system, such as changes in the vertical dimension of occlusion, bite and open in the breathing and speech. In addition, the most used therapeutic procedure for the prevention and / or amelioration of harmful habits promoted by the use of orthodontic pacifiers for the elimination of the causative agent in the daily lives of children. Final Considerations: The prevalence of supporting statistics on the influence of the use of orthodontic pacifiers on the development of harmful habits in the stomatognathic system became evident. Furthermore, the results obtained from the guiding question in relation to the cause and treatment.
