Abstract

The loss of the eyeball can cause damage to the self-esteem and social life of patients, in addition to atresia in the affected muscles. This article aims to report the rehabilitation by ocular prosthesis of an anophthalmic patient. Male patient, 54 years old, sought the Dental Specialties Center of the Amazonas State University reporting aesthetic dissatisfaction after the loss of the eyeball. In the anamnesis, he reported he had lost his left eyeball due to bacterial infection and had no systemic problems that would compromise the treatment. The extraoral examination showed facial asymmetry in the ocular region. The construction of the ocular prosthesis was started with an impression of the cavity using alginate. The impression was included in dental gypsum where a wax pattern was made, which was tested and adapted on the patient. The prosthetic iris was painted and included in the wax pattern, which was included in a plaster muffle. After removing the wax, white thermopolymerized acrylic resin was added, the muffle was closed and pressed. After removing the resin prosthesis from the muffle, a characterization was carried out with colored pigments and a new pressing, this time with colorless thermopolymerizable acrylic resin. After setting, finishing and polishing, the prosthesis was installed. Two follow up sessions were held where the patient reported good adaptation and satisfaction with the aesthetic result. It was concluded that an ocular prosthesis reestablished the patient's facial aesthetics and the eyelid support, providing his reintegration into social life and improving self-esteem.
