Abstract

Introduction: The whitening treatment has been gaining prominence in the dental market, however its adverse effects are still controversial, especially about what changes the treatment can cause in composite resins. Objective: To evaluate changes in the roughness of composite resin surfaces submitted to 2 different bleaching techniques based on hydrogen peroxide. Material and Method: Hydrogen peroxide 35% was used in 3 sessions of 45 minutes each and Hydrogen peroxide 7.5% for 45 minutes for 15 consecutive days. Profiling, roughness and electron microscopy analysis were performed. Results: The average roughness (Ra) of the resin changed after exposure to different bleaching agents when compared to the control group (with a statistically significant difference p <0.05). The profilometric images showed that resins submitted to bleaching obtained a more irregular surface with small reliefs, capable of decreasing Ra and altering the microtexture of the surface. Scanning electron microscopy showed no difference between groups. Conclusion: The average roughness values of the resin specimens decreased when compared to that of the uncleaned samples. The profilometric images showed that the specimens exposed to the bleaching agents presented a more irregular surface with small reliefs, capable of decreasing the average roughness value and altering the microtexture of the surface. In the scanning electron microscopy it was not possible to verify the difference between the groups.
