Abstract

Oral diseases can be prevented through preventive measures and health promotion and education. The riverside inhabitants of Baixo São Francisco have a low socioeconomic status, and for this reason, unfortunately, they often are unable to access quality oral health. Researchers at the Federal University of Alagoas in partnership with other universities and environmental agencies, innovated with oral health promotion actions aimed at the riverside community in the cities of Baixo São Francisco. This study aimed to report an experience lived in the riverside communities during the III Scientific Expedition of Baixo São Francisco, between November 29th and December 10th, 2020. Observational research of the action-research type can be developed through articulation of the Expedition`s coordination team, teachers, education, environment and health secretaries, with the EMATER team, from the municipalities. Posters and recreational activities were used together with the distribution of oral hygiene kits. A brief analysis of the oral condition of children in the cities visited was also carried out. With that, it was possible to verify the presence of several malocclusions and decayed teeth, as well as loss of dental elements at an early stage. In the face of a population that is in social vulnerability, this study contributed with a view on the experience of dental surgeons, which should be considered an interesting and important part in the implementation and sustainability of the oral health program for the riverside population.
