Abstract

Prosthetic stomatitis and angular cheilitis are Candida-associated lesions. The treatment of these conditions, commonly performed with conventional antifungal agents, has often been shown to be unsatisfactory due to the development of microbial resistance, highlighting the need for alternative measures. Thus, the aim of this article is to report a clinical case of treatment of prosthetic stomatitis and angular cheilitis with photodynamic therapy. A 46-year-old female patient presented to the Prosthodontics Service of the Clínica Escola de Odontologia complaining of lack of retention of the maxillary total prosthesis. On clinical examination, there was a clinical picture of Candida infection throughout the length of the hard palate and bilateral angular cheilitis. Since the patient had already been treated with topical antifungal and presented recurrence of the lesions, we opted for treatment with photodynamic therapy, using methylene blue at a concentration of 0.005%. After being applied to the infected tissues, the photosensitizing agent remained in contact with the lesion for a pre-irradiation time of 5 min and an irradiation time of 90 s. Two sessions were performed with an interval of 7 days and 15 days after the last irradiation, the patient was re-evaluated and no longer presented clinical evidence of the disease. Photodynamic therapy, following the protocol described above, was effective in eliminating this patient's fungal lesions after two treatment sessions.
