Abstract

Introduction: The maxillofacial prosthesis is an alternative for the rehabilitation of patients who have had intraoral or extraoral losses. This can be made with acrylic resin or silicone, the second being the most used. The most critical step in making these prostheses is pigmentation, as the proximity to the patient's skin color is essential for a good esthetic result. Objective: The purpose of this work is to discuss, through a literature review, the different pigmentation techniques and the types of existing pigments. Material and Method: A bibliographic search was carried out in Pubmed, Academic Google and Scielo databases and 33 articles were selected to compose the review. Results: For the characterization of maxillofacial prostheses it is necessary to combine intrinsic and extrinsic pigmentation techniques. Of these, the intrinsic is the one that suffers the least chromatic change with the use of the prosthesis. Pigments can be of organic and inorganic origin (more stable). New types of pigments have been developed in an attempt to approximate the skin color with the color of the prosthesis, such as thermochromic pigments. Despite so many studies and experiences carried out on maxillofacial prostheses, it is observed that the biggest problems faced by professionals who work in the field of maxillofacial specialty in the manufacture of prostheses are their durability due to color changes. Conclusion: Further studies are needed to improve pigmentation techniques and to develop pigments that are more stable to exposure to ultraviolet rays and the action of cleaning agents.
