Abstract

The association of kefir and guarana, both recognized for their convenient health effects, could result in beneficial properties for the treatment of diabetes mellitus (DM). The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of water kefir and the hydroethanolic extract of guarana (Paullinia Cupana), used individually or associated, in improving the biochemical parameters and histology of diabetic rats. The animals were divided into 5 experimental groups. Group 1: rats without DM, group 2: rats with DM, group 3: rats with DM treated with water kefir, group 4: rats with DM treated with guarana hydroethanolic extract, group 5: rats with DM treated with water kefir and guarana hydroethanolic extract. After treatment, the effects of these formulations on fasting glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides, creatinine and the enzymes alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) were evaluated. Kefir, Guarana and combination diets prevented hyperglycemia in diabetic rats (p < 0.05) compared to the diabetic control group. Treatment with guarana and kefir with guarana prevented the increase in serum AST levels, and either treatment with kefir, guarana or a combination of them prevented the increase in ALT, with greater significance in the last two groups. In addition, the groups treated with kefir and guarana showed an improvement in creatinine levels. It is concluded that diets had the potential to prevent some complications of DM and should be better investigated.
