Abstract

The concept of aesthetics is subjective, therefore, it is linked to the particularities of each region, ethnicity, education, gender, and personal experiences of individuals. Through time it has been manifested in different ways. The aim of this study was to analyze the participants' knowledge about procedures with aesthetic purpose, their execution, and to evaluate satisfaction regarding facial and smile aesthetics. This was a cross-sectional study, in a population group of a higher education institution, composed of undergraduate students, professors of the dental school, and patients seen in the school clinic of the institution, by means of the application of a specific questionnaire. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The association between variables was verified using the chi-square and Fisher's exact tests. Regarding the questions about what most draws attention to someone's face, all groups pointed to the smile as the most attractive item. Regarding the color and size of the teeth, the academics' groups were the most dissatisfied. As for performing the procedures of bichectomy and dental contact lenses for aesthetic purposes, the groups that would most undergo these procedures were also the academics. As for botulinum toxin, the groups that would adhere to this procedure were the students from the 10th period and the professors. However, all the groups approached would undergo some procedure to modify something on the face. About the new technologies and treatments used in dentistry, it was observed that the patients demonstrated to have less knowledge. It was concluded that there is a divergence among the groups studied in how facial and smile aesthetics can be evaluated and performed.
