Abstract

Introduction: Aiming to introduce more conservative restorations, endocrowns emerged, monolithic crowns whose preparation involves the margins of the cavity, retained by the pulp chamber without needing the involvement of the root canals. Objective: To review the literature on endocrowns, to clarify their indications, advantages, disadvantages, and how they can be used as an alternative in clinical practice. Methods: This is an integrative literature review that consulted the National Library of Medicine (PubMed) database, using the following descriptors: “Endocrowns”, “Endodontically treated teeth” and “monoblock”. Inclusion criteria for sample selection were articles published and indexed free of charge in the period from January 2012 to January 2022 (last 10 years). Results: Twenty articles that fit the previously established criteria were included. The reviewed studies indicate that this is a restoration with satisfactory aesthetics and more conservative for endodontically treated teeth, being an option with lower cost and speed indicated in its clinical stages, strongly for molars, in cases where there is minimal interocclusal space, as well as the presence of curved or narrow root channels, which makes it impossible to carry out conventional treatment using root pins. Conclusions: Endocrowns are a viable restorative option for endodontically treated molars. However, for premolars and anterior teeth, there are no studies that demonstrate effectiveness that justifies its indications. These restorations can be made of polymers and ceramics, especially vitreous ceramics that favor adhesion. However, more clinical studies need to be carried out to better understand the longevity of this type of restoration.
