Abstract

Patients with disabilities, especially mental disabilities, diseases or other neurological alterations, have difficulties with daily self-care and need help from their caregivers. This study aimed to understand the quality of life of people with disabilities and their caregivers, the burden on caregivers and the impact of tooth extractions with infection or pain on the quality of life of both. To this end, 40 people were assessed between 2020 and 2021: 20 patients with mental disabilities, diseases or other neurological disorders who needed tooth extractions with a history of infection and/or pain, and 20 caregivers. Both groups answered the Quality of Life Assessment Tool (WHOQOL-Bref) about the patient. The caregivers also answered the Burden Interview to assess the burden of caring for the disabled person. No statistical differences were found in the quality of life questionnaire in the Physical Domain (p = 0.930), Psychological Domain (p = 0.314), Social Relations Domain (p= 0.620) and Environmental Domain (p= 0.894). All the caregivers reported that the impacts caused after tooth extraction on the quality of life of their child or sibling had an impact on their own quality of life. With the extraction of teeth with a history of pain and/or infection, there was a qualitative improvement in the physical health, local sensitivity, diet and sleep of the disabled person, which had a direct impact on the life of the caregiver, and there was unanimous agreement that there was an improvement in the quality of life of both with the resolution of the dental problem.
