Abstract

The growing demand for minimally invasive and aesthetically pleasing dental procedures makes resin infiltrant a promising approach for the treatment of incipient carious lesions and non-cavitated white enamel spots. The objective of the present literature review is to address the role of resin infiltrant in minimally invasive dentistry, highlighting its possibilities and clinical indications as well as its physicochemical properties, application techniques, durability, color stability, and aesthetic outcome. This work is based on a literature review and used 29 articles in English and Spanish from the last 11 years to analyze a resin infiltrant-ICON as a minimally invasive treatment for incipient white spot lesions; fluorosis spots; hypoplastic spots; and molar incisor hypomineralization spots. Considering the stabilization of white spot lesions, masking the color of the lesion, the durability and stability of the resin infiltrant, the clinical results obtained with its use are very favorable, with the manufacturer-recommended usage demonstrating the most complete utilization of the product. These results are stable over time, potentially improving the visual appearance of the infiltrated lesion through periodic repolishing. However, long-term studies are necessary to evaluate these characteristics. Within the limitations of this study, the authors concluded that treatment with resin infiltrant outperforms other options, such as microabrasion or topical fluoride application. However, the high cost of this treatment is currently the biggest obstacle to its wider dissemination.
