Abstract

This research aimed to evaluate the direct association between individual characteristics, socioeconomic status, oral health conditions, and the delay in seeking oral health services among the elderly in a large Brazilian municipality. This is a cross-sectional epidemiological study conducted in 2015. Binary and multiple stepwise logistic regression analyses were used to estimate the associations between independent variables and the time elapsed since the last dental visit, forming two dependent variables in years: t1 (<1; ≥1) – up to one year; 2 years or more, and t2 (<3; ≥3) – up to 2 years; 3 years or more (p<0.20). Of the 325 elderly participants, 56.88% were women and 59.32% were between 65 and 74 years old. Several factors were associated with longer wait times for dental appointments. These factors included being 75 years or older, needing a full dental prosthesis, experiencing toothache, seeking private dental services, and having pain related reasons, tooth extraction, and other dental problems. The elderly, especially those who are socially vulnerable, tend to seek dental services for tooth extractions and dental prostheses, often in private dental office. Therefore, the results highlight the need for the implementation of public policies to expand access to oral health services and, above all, to dental prostheses within primary care, allowing equity, comprehensiveness, and quality of life for this population.
