Abstract

Introduction: Colon cancer is a major public health issue and one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in Brazil, with alarming numbers of hospitalizations and deaths. Objective: To analyze the epidemiological profile of colon cancer in Brazil between 2017 and 2023, focusing on hospitalization and mortality rates, geographical distribution, and risk factors. Methodology: Descriptive cross-sectional study with a quantitative, retrospective approach using data from the DATASUS Hospital Information System. Hospitalizations and deaths due to colon cancer were analyzed, considering region, gender, age group, and deaths by region across all age groups. Results: There were 378.495 hospitalizations and 30.447 deaths from colon cancer between 2017 and 2023. The Southeast region led in the number of cases, followed by the South region. The most affected age group was 60 to 64 years, with 57.552 hospitalizations. Regarding mortality, the Southeast region also led in this aspect. Discussion: The geographical and demographic distribution of cases highlights the need for preventive measures and awareness across the country. Analyzing the epidemiological profile is crucial for guiding effective health policies and prevention and treatment programs. Conclusion: Colon cancer represents a significant challenge for the Brazilian health system. Raising public awareness about risk factors and the importance of early diagnosis is essential to reduce the impact of this disease on society.
