Formas Alternativas de Consumo de Tabaco y su Relación con la Salud Bucodental

Resumen

Introducción: Recientemente, nuevas formas de consumo de tabaco se han vuelto cada vez más populares, principalmente entre los jóvenes, como los cigarros electrónicos, el narguile y el hábito de fumar el tabaco, siendo vistos como más diversificados e inofensivos. Objetivo: Realizar una revisión de la literatura sobre las formas alternativas de consumo de tabaco y su relación con la salud bucal. Materiales y métodos: Se realizó una búsqueda bibliográfica en las bases de datos PubMed, Periódicos CAPES y Scielo, utilizando los términos "E-cigarette; Waterpipe smoking; Chewing tobacco;", seleccionando artículos que destacaran las características de estas formas alternativas de consumo de tabaco y sus repercusiones orales. Resultados: La popularización de formas alternativas de fumar entre los jóvenes se debe principalmente a la introducción de aromas y sabores en el tabaco, así como a las estrategias de marketing y a la idea errónea de que no es perjudicial. Varios estudios han demostrado los efectos nocivos para la salud, y otros estudios informan de la posible asociación con cambios en la cavidad bucal. Conclusión: Los cigarrillos electrónicos, la shisha y el hábito de masticar tabaco, son formas alternativas de fumar con riesgo subestimado por sus usuarios, presentando varias repercusiones orales tempranas, incluyendo lesiones potencialmente y malignas. Este tema debe considerarse un problema de salud pública, y deben aplicarse estrategias de prevención dirigidas a los jóvenes, así como la concienciación por parte de los dentistas hacia sus pacientes, con el fin de reducir el aumento de esta nueva generación de fumadores.
