Abstract

Introduction: The stomatognathic system needs to be in balance to function properly. Problems related to malocclusions can bring damage this system, generating several disorders, among which are orofacial pain and joint noises. Objective: This paper aims to analyze the orofacial pain caused by temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD) in totally or partially edentulous individuals. Material and Method: The present study is an integrative literature review, with searches in SciELO, PubMed, MEDLINE, LILACS, CUMED, BINACIS, using the descriptors "Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction Syndrome", "edentulism", "pain" and their variants in English and Portuguese. Results: Ten studies were selected, seven of which addressed tooth loss as a triggering factor for orofacial pain, with more severe pain in fully edentulous individuals. Orofacial pain was related to the time of edentulism (more than 10 years) and to the use of ill-fitting prostheses due to temporomandibular joint involvement. Females had a higher frequency of TMD-related orofacial pain. Conclusion: The individuals with greater tooth loss, with more involved quadrants, the length of edentulism and the use of ill-fitting prostheses were variables clinically related to TMD-related orofacial pain.
